Application Ongoing! Join UP Red Cross Youth!

Org Profile:
The UP Red Cross Youth (UPRCY) is a duly recognized university-wide, service-oriented, student-based organization in the University of the Philippines–Diliman and a member council of the Philippine National Red Cross, Quezon City Chapter. Since 1992, it has been the only org in UP Diliman which offers first aid and basic life support services.

Activities:

We conduct various humanitarian and socio-civic services and programs, as well as other activities, such as:

First aid and basic life support training
Medical, dental, circumcision missions
Blood programs (blood donation drives, awareness and networking for donors, assistance for those in need of blood)
Community and volunteer work
Personal development (basic leadership training, team building seminars, weekly jogging, ultimate frisbee, skating, rappelling, wall-climbing, etc.)
Marketing and fund-raising (marketing seminars, food sale, rummage sale)
Org bonding activities (videoke, outings, parties and porma days, road-trips, inuman, etc)

Tambayan location:

The Red Table up the stairs (Beta Sigma Frat tambayan) near CASAA, in front of the Center for International Studies, Benton Hall beside PHAn. An alternate route is to enter from the PHAn main entrance, turn right past the photocopier, and straight ahead down the corridor.

Why you should join:

The UPRCY channels the potential of the youth for a concrete and significant difference in society, guided by the humanitarian principle of the Red Cross, through passionate and excellent service in an array of socio-civic projects and activities.

The org also supplements the theoretical education in UP by providing means for the students to learn in practice beyond the bounds of the classrooms and limitations of textbooks. The org offers practical knowledge such as everyday first aid know-how and people associations, as well as pre-employment experience in marketing, human resource, and medicine. Members grow in the org, and the org grows with them.

For pre-medicine students, the first aid training learned in the org, once certified by the QC Red Cross Chapter, can mean a free summer since first aid training is required in one summer in med school.

Lastly, friends, bonds, and connections created transcend the stay of members in the org as many UPRCY alumni can vouch, and for many UPRCYers, their membership does not really end in graduation from college.

From all these, time spent in the UPRCY is time invested well.

Application requirements:

basic leadership training
first aid and basic life support training (6 Saturdays)
active participation in org activities
45 tambay hours
accomplished sig sheet
org immersion
formal interview (latter part of the application)
and others

The application for membership for the First Semester 09-10 is as follows:

The UP Red Cross Youth application lasts one semester and is handled by the Human Resource and Development Department. During the first semester it runs from June to October.

Training

The organization requires all applicants to undergo First Aid Training and Basic Life Support for six training days (8Am-5PM with Lunch Break). By default these are scheduled on Saturdays but are subject to change depending on applicants' schedules and date of official holidays. Examinations are usually held on the sixth Saturday.

Examinations are of two parts, General First Aid and Basic Life Support. Each part is further divided into two types, a paper and pencil test and practicals. The passing mark is set by the Training and Development Office and may vary from one training period to another but is generally set around 70-75 points for each part. You must attain the minimum passing mark for both parts to pass the training examination.

Org Integration

Aside from undergoing training, the organization also requires its applicants to fulfill certain requirements to familiarize applicants with the organization's advocacies and services. Among the general requirements are:
  • a batch project;
  • accomplishment of applicant's sig sheet;
  • attainment of a minimum duration of "tambay" hours with the organization's resident members;
  • attendance to a minimum number of activities organized or hosted by the organization;
  • and lastly, participation in other activities organized for the acquaintance of applicants-applicants and applicants-members.

The organization views and treats its applicants as future team members and partners in its various activities and believes that these requirements are necessary to introduce the organization's advocacies and principles, familiarize applicants with the members' work ethic, as well as integrate applicants into the org culture of camaraderie and humane relations.

For other queries, clarifications, and notifications of relevant application dates and events such as the release of signature sheets and general assembly of applicants, please leave us with contact information through which you can be reached.
