Engkwentro Tickets at P80

Hello UPRCY Friends!

As part of its fundraising activities, the UP Red Cross Youth is selling tickets of the 2009 Cinemalaya movie "Engkwentro", starring Felix Roco and directed by Pepe Diokno.

SYNOPSIS
Richard (Felix Roco) and Raymond (Daniel Medrana) are two teenage brothers. Richard is the leader of his gang, "Bagong Buwan," while Raymond is just being inducted into rival gang, "Batang Dilim." Complications arise at a deadly midnight engkwentro (square-off), when Raymond is given the task of killing his older brother.

Meanwhile, the City Death Squad lurks the streets. This real-life vigilante group is allegedly backed by the city mayor (Celso Ad Castillo) and responsible for many unsolved murders of teen gangsters. Today, they are hunting down Richard. Will they take the younger brother, too?

UPRCY Receives Gawad Dekada from PCMC

The UP Red Cross Youth has been actively providing venue for the common folk to become heroes and lifesavers via its blood program. This include:

• promotion of blood donation awareness through seminars;
• blood nertworking for patients in need of blood donors; and
• organizing blood drives within and beyond the UP Diliman Campus.

The Philippine Children's Medical Center (PCMC) is one of the most frequent beneficiaries, along with the Quezon City Red Cross, of the blood drives of UPRCY. And, this 16th of July, 2009, the PCMC has honored the organization, its top donor, by recognizing its unwavering support for the institution with a trophy received by UPRCY Projects and Operations (PAO) members Patrick Caraig of the Community Development Program, and Chimi Cuevas, of the Medical Missions Program.

Freshmen Concert FA Booth and Lemonade Stand

July 10, 2009
For the past annual Freshmen Concerts all held at the UP Bahay ng Alumni, the UPRCY had been yearly invited to provide first aid services during the event. Though UPRCYers had come to learn that casualties during these events are low (UP Freshmen are usually behaved and some even remain seated during a rock concert, while the security is tight and entry is limited to UP affiliated individuals), they still accepted these requests and came to the events prepared for the worst. Though the only victim in this year's Freshmen Concert was UPRCYer and First Aider Adrian Ilog (shallow laceration on the left palm), the UPRCYres did not expect what they experienced.

The day before the event, former UPRCY applicant Austin Ong sent a business proposal to Kash Engada, the VP for Finance, to set-up a lemonade stand for the concert since the drinks concessionaire backed-out of the event. There was also a proposal for the UPRCY to sell 100 UP-stamped tumblers along with the lemonade. Since there would be a monopoly of drinks since the only other seller of drinks in the concert would be Rodick's, which bottled drinks are more costly than the lemonade, UPRCY President Steve Santos signed a contract to sell both the drinks and the tumblers.


Because of the short notice by Mr. Ong, preparations were inevitably rushed until the last minute: acquisition of iced tea and lemonade dispensing machines, buying the lemonade powder, plastic cups, and ice, and purchasing almost 50 gallons of purified water. Members also gruelled with the task of preparing the drinks manually and it took time before they came up with a system that simplified their tasks of mixing and selling. Mishaps were numerous: spilling iced tea and lemonade powders and water; needing to fix a leaking lemonade dispensing machine; diluting, concentrating, re-diluting, and re-concentrating drinks to taste; and managing to keep-up with the demands of buyers. The members took shifts in manning the wet and crowded iced tea and lemonade booth, but each felt the heavy demand of the task, especially with their sticky hands and wet pants. The concert ended with 20 or 1/5 of the tumblers sold, and decent income from selling the drinks.


The first aid booth lacked the action the drinks stand had a generous supply of, and members felt exhausted after the event (maybe with the exeption of the FA Booth Team Leader who had to stay at her booth at all times). Nonetheless, the publicity of the org to the Freshmen who were able to see the FA Booth, and the business venture into selling lemonade, iced tea, and tumblers would hopefully bolster the resources of the org, whether thru more applicants and eventual member-volunteers or thru finances that fuel the org's functions and humanitarian activities.

The application for membership for the First Semester 09-10 is as follows:

The UP Red Cross Youth application lasts one semester and is handled by the Human Resource and Development Department. During the first semester it runs from June to October.

Training

The organization requires all applicants to undergo First Aid Training and Basic Life Support for six training days (8Am-5PM with Lunch Break). By default these are scheduled on Saturdays but are subject to change depending on applicants' schedules and date of official holidays. Examinations are usually held on the sixth Saturday.

Examinations are of two parts, General First Aid and Basic Life Support. Each part is further divided into two types, a paper and pencil test and practicals. The passing mark is set by the Training and Development Office and may vary from one training period to another but is generally set around 70-75 points for each part. You must attain the minimum passing mark for both parts to pass the training examination.

Org Integration

Aside from undergoing training, the organization also requires its applicants to fulfill certain requirements to familiarize applicants with the organization's advocacies and services. Among the general requirements are:

• a batch project;
  
• accomplishment of applicant's sig sheet;
  
• attainment of a minimum duration of "tambay" hours with the organization's resident members;
  
• attendance to a minimum number of activities organized or hosted by the organization;
• and lastly, participation in other activities organized for the acquaintance of applicants-applicants and applicants-members.
  

The organization views and treats its applicants as future team members and partners in its various activities and believes that these requirements are necessary to introduce the organization's advocacies and principles, familiarize applicants with the members' work ethic, as well as integrate applicants into the org culture of camaraderie and humane relations.

Influenza A(H1N1) Informtion Dissemination

June 8 and 16, 2009

The hype of the Influenza A(H1N1) that was caused by the media took the attention of the country from its usual entertainment of scandals and politics. It caused public unrest and fear, especially since there was a huge gap between statistics of people acquiring the virus as well as news of governments ensuring strict measures to contain its spread, and information dissemination. As a proactive response to the pandemic, the UPRCY was invited by Dr. Zayas of the Center for International Studies in UP Diliman to give a talk to her three SEA 30 classes of around forty to fifty students each regarding the Influenza A(H1N1) virus.

To arm the UPRCY members of pertinent information on the health issue, the org requested for an Influenza A(H1N1) Educators' Training from the Community Health and Nursing Service (CHNS) of the QC Red Cross Chapter. The training was conducted by the Chapter Service Representative or the head of the CHNS, Ms. Janice Melody Adolfo on June 8, 2009 at the QC Red Cross Chapter and was attended by UPRCY members Via Go, Hannah Villanueva, Ellaine Lopez, Patrick Caraig, Jean Gregorio, Mel Quintos, Sue Quirante, CJ Prelliguera, Yssa Idolor, Didi Parlade, Kiteng Cabling, Kamille Ignacio, Kash Engada, Steve Santos, Ttin del Prado,Dope Cobarrubia, Khen Bautista, Yanna Feliciano, and UPRCY Faculty Adviser Ms. Loida Famador.

Priorly, the start of classes, supposedly June 9, 2009 for UP Diliman, was suspended for one week by the Department of Education (Dep.Ed) and Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) for schools to prepare measures to prevent the spread of the virus within their campuses. Hence, the A(H1N1) Lecture for the SEA 30 students commenced on June 16, 2009. Only members who attended the the Educators' Training gave talks regarding the origin and characteristics of the virus, its pathology, its infection statistics, and ways to cure and prevent infections.

Through undergoing the Educators' Training and arming the members with information regarding the A(H1N1) virus, the UPRCY not only dispelled anxiety and misconceptions about the virus, but also performed a small but vital role in keeping the UP Community informed so that it may safeguard its health and well-being.
